Alison Thompson

Artist Statement:

My artistic practice remains invested in both art and craft. For me the activity of one field, informs the other. The result is an energetic craft-art cohort where classic crafts motifs are appropriated by drawing, and where my painter’s palette finds a voice in embroidery.

The repetitive act of drawing Canada in new colours, and patterns over time and again has resulted from my current exploration into the history of Canadian Craft. It is also a strand in the evolution of a larger embroidery piece where I have stitched a new pattern for Canada.

This particular body of work allows me to address such visual themes as, colour, and pattern, in a playful manner while simultaneously permitting an exploration of my theoretical interests in culture, the everyday, and identity.
