Artist Statement:

My work in printed matter examines structures found in text, numbers, and spatial imaging (especially the world-image dsicribed in cartographic projections). By altering the structural relations inherent in text (anagrams), creating ad-hoc visual constructions with number values, and radically shifting the spatial orientations in map projections, my intention is to question the degree to which the conventional uses of language (literal interpretation), numbers (simple linear or sequential ideas), and world-image (the authority of the Mercator and similar projections), have become objectified.

Beyond the critical perspective of problematizing these obect-relations, I elaborate and extend upon their contradictions and (assumed) equivalences, by seeking a variety of new configurations, using language, number and spatial relations as a kind of material. I claim no special authority in so doing, as this is a kind of open source field of enquiry accessible to anyone willing to play with it. As such, I have adopted a new identity for the purpose of this work, under the name of A. CONTARCTOR.
