Artist Statement:
This book piece titled extractions 2 continues the examination of place begun in the first book extractions. Extractions 2 are comprised of two series of images. The first group of images is a digital / analogue dip tich. The eight images are comprised of two different angles or views of the four corners of the city block that I live on. Each photograph is paired with a digitally manipulated linocut prints. The images in these dip tichs refer to each other. This series of images also represents how place impacts and affects us, and how we influences place.
The second series of photographs has been digitally extracted from the first series of photographs from the first Extractions book. This series appears simultaneously as both macro / satellite images. These images function as a metaphor for the interconnectedness of the neighborhoods and communities within and beyond the city.
The two series of images in this book piece are not so much a documentary of the neighborhood or community I have lived in all my life, but rather a process of extracting the geographic and to a certain extent the social elements that this neighborhood is comprised of. It is through this process extraction that varying degrees of abstraction and ambiguity emerge as a formal device, not only bringing these two series of images together, but also referencing the first Extractions bookwork.
