Miles Stemp
Artist Statement:
I did not realize at first, but there is definitely a borderline obsessive-compulsive nature to my work; I get meticulous with things. This meticulousness sometimes flowers into a beautiful obsession, I find myself spending hours making hand-drawn scientific graph paper or carving the backs of plastic wall sockets to fit an orange glowing thing really snugly. Other times it is simply a result of the medium and I am dodging and burning analogue, black and white photo paper to make a portraits of myself look like the stages of the moon. Though these hyper focused moments are unable to be sustained for long periods of time, they are feverishly intensive and dominate my practice. A current interest that is driving recent works is my attempt to be as accurate as a machine and the obvious failures that lie therein.
