Throughout my formative years I read a lot of diaristic zines about the exciting and experimental lives of punk kids who lived predominately in the United States. Within the pages of zines were stories of traveling, do-it-yourself (DIY), dumpster diving, working crappy jobs, getting by on next to nothing, going to see bands and making music. Such activities reflected my lifestyle at the time and the things I was interested in.
This punk/activist lifestyle proclaimed an anti-consumer, non-hierarchical, anti-patriarchal, critical, anti-authoritative collective way of life which has shaped the way I live, the way I make art, how I use art and how I position myself within my community.
I use zine processes such as storytelling, collage, cut and paste, photocopying, stencilling and printed matter. I create stories based on daily experience and my living environment such as home, work and location from the past and present to formulate a narrative about my life and the people within it. I’m interested in highlighting stuff that catches my attention in my day-to-day travels and surroundings. These stories take form in posters, books, objects, collage, quilts, banners and print.
